I captured the moon a few nights ago and have a more serious plan for this but thought I would just construct something for the critique group. If this was to be entered in a competition, it would have to be Open or Creative. Even so, it would be good to hear how it could be improved. While I did not want a silhouette, it might be improved if the Owl was much darker.

I agree, but I like the overall concept, it is quite striking. It is hard to tell whether cropping a bit off the right hand side would centre it up more and whether this is even important.
I really like the concept of this image and the position of the owls tail feathers just clipping the moon, in my opinion, is just right, I would agree that the owl could be darkened down slightly and maybe in this context the moon could be a brighter white, and finally a square crop.
I'm not sure about the feathers clipping the moon, it looks accidental rather than on purpose to me. I've never really seen the 'man in the moon', but you could probably darken some of the crater areas to add a bit of contrast and possibly give the impression of the man in the moon looking at the owl?
