My new project is behind the scenes at Bishop's Cleeve FC. My first day shooting coincided with the biggest victory in their 120-year history, when they knocked Torquay Utd out of the FA Cup. I have great access and got some great shots. This shows some of the players studying the programme in the dressing room before the game. I have some reservations about it as part of a documentary project, which is why I am posting it here and welcome comments.
An interesting project, John. I quite like it. I like the way it is sort of symmetrical but also isn't. Maybe it is cropped a bit close at the top and bottom but sometimes this is unavoidable. I like the poses. There was probably a lot going on so well captured. Above all, it tells a story.
A good idea to gain access to a team or any sports person. I have no issue with the capture or compostition but puzzled about them looking at the Programme; is this normal? Could they be checking on the rules or looking at the pub menu for later?
Dave...you've put your finger on one of my concerns. This was a genuine candid, shot as it happened. But I worry that it looks set up, and maybe a bit odd? My other concern is that there are four of them, when odd numbers of subjects are usually more appealing. Though that didn't do The Beatles any harm, so maybe I shouldn't be worried.
A great snapshot documenting the life in the changing rooms, personally I haven't any issues with there being four of them, it kind of complements the six shirts hanging up behind them.
I don't know why, but it's the 'colour' of their shirts that doesn't quite gel for me, I want them to be darker or just more contrasty as I keep getting drawn to their dark trousers. I would also crop off the crests at the top (unless you've got a bit more of the rightmost one - when I'd rotate to get them all sitting at the same height). Actually, if you crop to just below the collars of the hanging shirts (so there's no white showing), it really emphasises the four guys and the shirts behind.
