Wandering along the canal at Stonehouse the other day and was taken by this derelict building on the opposite side with the textures of the rusty roof all being taken over by the trees and foliage. I had originally thought of a mono approach which looked ok on the back of the camera but wasn't sure when I got it into Lightroom. The original version did include some of the canal but I felt that it detracted from the actual building so was cropped in a bit, other tweaks include a radial selection mask to adjust the actual building to make it stand out more to the eye and another to soften the foliage, I've also tried to address the bright area of sky in the top left but decided against cloning as it was not what I saw on the day.
Cheers
Rob
Having been to that area I understand the mood you are trying to capture, and with that I feel you have been successful. The bit of canal you have left in gives a sense of place. Good point about the bright patch of sky, I noticed there is a smaller one on the right too, maybe this could be cropped out by cropping in on the right slightly? I think it's important to have this in colour because of all the subtle greens. Looking at it the brightening of the building is quite obvious, but I think it helps anyway because it is only emphasising how out of place the building might look in these natural surroundings. The building is photogenic - I like the textures and colours - more interesting than new builds I find.
Well done Rob, this is fabulous! I love the colours and the whole ambience. I would crop a sliver off the bottom, perhaps about half the height of the water on the right edge, but I'm not really bothered by the sky.
Excellent work, Des :-)
An intriguing building. I would not have been able to walk past this without taking photos. I like the red roof contrast with the green which would not have worked in B&W. I agree with Des that a small trim at the bottom would help.
