The judge thought that the original image was cropped too close to her feet and that mermaids usually had tails, does a square crop address these issues and enhance the image?
I am inclined to believe that the main thing wrong is the title. By mentioning Mermaid, you set an expectation of a tail. "Entrapped girl" or similar would then not draw as much attention to the cropped feet which I assume you do not have. The overall image is intriguing and lighting dramatic but not sure I like her legs cut off either.

I think this is great, but you need to crop in a tiny bit on the left where theres slivers of light and dark right on the border on her leg. The lighting on her right shoulder could be toned down a little so that it's not brighter than the brightest bits of her face. Other than that, fabulous.
