“Hi David, I agree with Saul, the grass at the left is quite powerful, but doesn't fit with the rest, I would however leave as much of the recession of columns as you can without including any of the greenery to the left. I'd also crop one more stone up from the bottom which I think gives it a better aspect ration and also makes if feel a bit more intimate.I do really like the series of columns at the right which leads you to the two arches filled with green at the end.Cheers, Des :-)”

“Interesting picture, and well seen. I can see why you may be wondering about cropping, it seems a very 'busy' image, but then that maybe best conveys the location? Not sure myself, but if you were to crop, one suggestion would be to create two images by dividing it down the column just left of centre... although it's kind of good just as it is. This picture makes me stop and consider it... for me this shows it was successful. ”

“Good to see you taking part here Saul, and look forward to seeing you on Zoom on Tuesday. I echo Des's thoughts. Years ago an experienced photography tutor looked at one of my efforts and said 'What is this a picture of?' I said it was sheep in a field around a tree and a manor house behind and a stone wall in front. He said, 'Too many 'ands'.' And this...and that... etc. You need a lead actor, and supporting cast. I often think of that. Same here...a wide aperture would make it a picture of the lifebelt and steps.”

Up on the hill watching F15's & F35's flying through the valleys by 8:30 in the morning. This image was taken at 2000th sec @ f4 and pretty much filled the frame at 200mm zoom, I wanted to use a slower shutter speed to blur the background but wanted a few in the bag beforehand. What I like about these exercises is that you get to see the aircrafts fully kitted out for action and with more interesting backdrops, although this particular day was a tad hazy and the photos did suffer so had to be tweaked slightly in Lightroom. Not sure how this particular subject will do in front of judges in either open or action subject rounds, be interested in hearing your thoughts.CheersRob”

“I like the idea of this, but I'm afraid for me it's not working. I think the problem is the positioning of the lifebouy and the background. The background is not working and I think because the lifebouy and steps are in the same plane you could shoot this wide open (F1.8 if possible) to blur the background which will focus on them to the exclusion of everything else. You could also shoot from a little lower so that the lifebouy is totally out of the water with just blurred building behind it. Obviously I would never have thought of that out in the field :-) but is seems to make sense to me now!”
